Journalist Dean Jones has said that, unlike the rest of us, Ange Postecoglou has not been surprised the least bit by how well Guglielmo Vicario has settled in at Tottenham Hotspur.

While Hugo Lloris had declined over the last two years, Vicario still has some big shoes to fill as the Frenchman had been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the last decade and a modern-day icon at Spurs.

With the 27-year-old not having played for a club anywhere near Tottenham’s statute before, some might have perhaps expected him to have a steep learning curve and have a few nervy moments at the start of the season.

Instead, the former Empoli man has just looked completely at ease since his very first game for the Lilywhites and has not only showcased his excellent shot-stopping ability but has also had no issues in playing out from the back under pressure, which is something Postecoglou demands from his number one.

Postecoglou is not surprised by Vicario’s talent

Speaking about the Italian’s impact in North London, Jones has now told GiveMeSport: “I’ve seen Postecoglou asked this question a couple of times and he always gives the same kind of smiling, half-chuckling answer, because I genuinely don’t think that he is surprised that Vicario has slotted in so easily.

“He talks about how that was one of the most important signings they had to do this summer and that they had to get it done early, because in his system, the goalkeeper is very important and needs to get up to speed in preseason and settle well and that’s exactly what Vicario has done.

“What I would say, though, is that I suspect a lot of Spurs players are probably quite surprised by just how good he is because I doubt many of them were very familiar with him before he arrived at Spurs.”

One can tell from Vicario’s body language that he is a big personality, who enjoys the spotlight of the big stage. That is something Ange would have likely sensed in his conversations with the goalkeeper prior to his switch in the summer, given how good a reader of people the Aussie coach is.
