Genoa head coach Alberto Gilardino has admitted that while he hopes Radu Dragusin will stay, he acknowledged that the Serie A club might need to make a ‘sacrifice’.
Tottenham appear to be wasting no time in trying to bring a centre-back through the door, with various outlets suggesting over the last few days that the Lilywhites are in pole position to secure Dragusin (Calciomercato).
In fact, Fabrizio Romano even asserted on Sunday that Spurs had already agreed on personal terms with the Romanian and are now working to resolve their differences with Genoa.
He explained that while the Lilywhites want to pay €25m (£21.6m), the Serie A side are holding out for €30m (£26m) for their starlet.
Genoa boss opens the door for Dragusin to leave
Gilardino has now provided a diplomatic answer about Dragusin’s future, refusing to assert with any conviction that the centre-back will remain at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris beyond January.
When asked about the centre-back’s future, the Genoa boss told TuttoMercatoWeb: “He’s important, let’s hope they don’t take it away from us.”
Gilardino then explained that while the club might have to make a financial sacrifice to hold on to the centre-back, he acknowledged that he would understand if they made ‘another’ kind of sacrifice by letting a key player leave.
When pressed on Tottenham’s strong interest in the defender, the 41-year-old responded: “It also includes other players in the squad, not just him. I hope no one goes away and that the club can make a sacrifice.
“At the same time, I would understand the club if they had to make a sacrifice in another way.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Reading between the lines of Gilardino’s statement, it sounds like he is resigned to the fact that Dragusin is on his way out of the club.
Tottenham will be hoping to have the Romanian through the door within the next few days, with seemingly only a difference of £4m in the valuations of the two parties.
