Chris Sutton has opined that Nuno Espirito Santo did not get enough time at Tottenham Hotspur to steer the ship around.
It is fair to say that the Spurs fan base was quite underwhelmed by the appointment of Espirito Santo in the summer of 2021.
The North London side appointed the Portuguese coach following a protracted manager search and it was clear at the time that he was far from the club’s top choice.
So, he was up against it from the start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the supporters quickly turned against him when the wheels came off, with the 49-year-old lasting just four months in the hot seat before being replaced by Antonio Conte.
After enjoying success at Al-Ittihad, who Espirito Santo guided to the Saudi Pro League title last season, the former Tottenham boss is now back in the Premier League as Nottingham Forest head coach.
Did Nuno Espirito Santo get a fair chance at Spurs?
The Midlands club have certainly had a new manager bounce, registering successive wins over Newcastle United and Manchester United, and Sutton sang Nuno’s for turning around the club’s form.
The pundit told BBC Radio 5 Live (01/01/24): “I think the start for Nuno has been really important because whether we like it or not, I think everybody would say the job he did initially at Wolves was really excellent and the third season they dipped a little bit but he viewed as quite a negative manager, and I think that was an issue for him at Tottenham.
“I don’t think he got long enough and it wasn’t necessarily fair him losing his job as early as he did leave it. But on the face of it, I thought it was an underwhelming appointment but winning games early helps.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Nuno will certainly feel harshly treated by Spurs and might be of the belief that he could have turned things around had he been given a couple of months on the job.
However, the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had become so toxic at the time that Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy had no choice but to make a change.
