Millwall manager Joe Edwards has revealed that Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte were both rather complimentary about Japhet Tanganga’s mentality.
Tanganga’s spell at Augsburg during the first half of the season could not have gone much worse, with the centre-back being sidelined with an injury for the first couple of months of the season and then failing to make a single appearance after returning to fitness.
The Tottenham academy graduate has thus decided to drop down to the Championship to get his career back on track, completing a loan switch to the Den until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old was thought of as a potential first-team regular at Hotspur Way just a couple of years ago and was even seen by some as a potential England prospect, with his injuries playing a part in his decline.
Mourinho and Conte give glowing Tanganga reviews
It has now emerged that Mourinho, who gave Tanganga his senior debut for Tottenham in 2020, and Conte, who used him very sparingly during this time at the North London club, have both praised the defender’s mentality.
Edwards, who previously worked as a youth coach at Chelsea, shared what the two former Spurs bosses said about the centre-back.
The Millwall manager said about Tanganga (via London News Online): “I’d seen him progress up to the Premier League and Champions League and then he dropped off a little bit – the ups and downs are normal.
“One query you often have is whether that is down to the mentality or attitude, because they get that taste of Premier League football – a bit more exposure and money. Some don’t cope well with it.
“I was really interested to know if anything had played a part in the last year or so. Japh played under Mourinho and Conte at Tottenham – I know them both. When this did start to progress last week I spoke to them both about what he was like as a lad.
“They are two managers in the game who hold players to incredibly high standards, that are big on attitude and strong mentality. I was already impressed from afar that they were both playing Japh in their team.
“Both were very complimentary about his mentality – that he is a top lad with a top attitude. That was a big plus and, from there, it was all about being confident we could get him to a place we need physically.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is certainly not surprising that Jose and Antonio were positive about Tanganga’s mentality as whatever one thinks of his qualities as a player, there is no doubt he is extremely humble and quite hardworking.
I believe the 24-year-old is too good for the Championship and if he can stay injury free, I think he will boss it at the Den, just as Joe Rodon is going at Elland Road.
