Jermaine Jenas has revealed that he did not fare well when he once tried to adopt Gareth Bale’s pre-match meal.
The topic of the players’ nutrition has generated quite a bit of headlines at Spurs over recent years, with Antonio Conte famously implementing a strict diet, which included a ban on ketchup and mayonnaise at the training ground (The Mirror).
Spurs fans of a certain age will remember that Juande Ramos adopted an ever more draconian approach to the players’ diet when he replaced Martin Jol back in 2007 (talkSPORT).
Jeans sheds light on Gareth Bale’s eating habits
Players’ pre-match meal became the topic of conversation on TNT Sports’ broadcast on Monday night ahead of Brighton’s clash against Wolves.
It was sparked by Pascal Gross when he admitted that he opts for rice, chicken, and olive oil, which bizarrely, he tops off with Weetabix.
Speaking about the Brighton midfielder’s choice, Jenas said (via The Sun): “I bet that’s just a superstition as well. There would have been one day where he had a bit of Weetabix as an extra and prob scored two goals and got an assist and thought that’s it, he has the formula.”
And when the commentator Adam Summerton asked Jenas about his own pre-match meal, the former Tottenham midfielder said: “I always struggled to eat. I just had a big bowl of cereal and just drank a lot of Lucozade I think. Night games were a lot easier pasta and chicken.”
Jenas then shed light on Bale’s rather surprising choice, revealing that he regretted it when he once tried to copy his former Tottenham teammate.
The 40-year-old explained: “The only meal I remember looking at and thinking why and how was Gareth Bale used to have like five slices of toast and a mountain of baked beans. I tried it once, it didn’t go well for me.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Some will perhaps read this and wonder how the diets of professional athletes are not more homogenised but the reality is that nutrition has always been quite personal, with different athletes responding differently to various diets.
That is not to say that these players can eat whatever they want as they would still have to eat to a very specific caloric intake and hit the right micronutrition and micronutrition targets. That is why Conte’s tactic of banning specific foods from the canteen was a rather bizarre approach.
