Tottenham Hotspur trio Heung-min Son, Pape Sarr, and Yves Bissouma have all seen their nations qualify for the next round of the Asia Cup and the African Cup of Nations, so Spurs fans will have to wait to see them return to the club. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Spurs skipper, Heung-min Son, is leading South Korea in the Asia Cup this month, which is a huge loss for the North London club, of course.
Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma is representing Mali and Pape Sarr is participating in his first AFCON tournament for current holders, Senegal.
When the three players jetted off for international duty, Spurs fans braced themselves to be without the influential trio for all of January and part of February, but at least one player will be heading back sooner than that.
How have Son, Sarr, and Bissouma fared this week?
After South Korea’s rather surprising 3-3 draw against Malaysia yesterday, in which Son scored an injury-time penalty, the Spurs man will remain in Qatar a while longer. South Korea qualified in second place in their group and will now face Saudi Arabia on January 30 in the round of 16.
Bissouma played the full 90 minutes but saw his Mali side stutter with a 0-0 draw against Namibia on Wednesday, but Mali qualify as group winners there. They will now face Burkina Faso in the round of 16, also playing on January 30.
Meanwhile, Sarr played 71 minutes for Senegal in a 2-0 win over Guinea, a result which saw Senegal qualify with ease as group winners. They will now face hosts Ivory Coast on January 29 in the round of 16.
But, here’s where it gets interesting. If Senegal and Mali both win their games, they will come up against one another in the quarter-finals, meaning one of Sarr or Bissouma will be heading back to Spurs by February 3.
Spurs Web Opinion
Great news for all three players that they are heading into the next round, and hopefully someone from that group can win their respective tournament. It will be nice to have either Sarr or Bissouma back early next month, though, we have to admit.
