The Athletic have explained that Ange Postecoglou was convinced about James Maddison being the right fit for Tottenham after his first conversation with the midfielder as the former Leicester Star was extremely keen to be a key part of the new project at the North London club.
Maddison is expected to be back in action against Manchester City this evening after nearly a three-month injury layoff, with many Spurs fans waiting with bated breath to watch the midfielder in action.
Ahead of his return, The Athletic have now dug into the impact that the newcomer has made at Tottenham and in the process, they have also shed light on the club’s decision to sign him in the summer.
Maddison was keen on the Tottenham project from day one
The Athletic explain that Tottenham had tracked Maddison right from his Coventry City days and decided that the time was right to move for him last summer for Leicester City’s relegation.
It is revealed that Spurs made it clear to the attacking midfielder how they saw him fitting in at N17, with Fabio Paratici telling the player how highly he has always rated him. That is when Postecoglou spoke with the England international as he often does with prospective new signings.
The report says that Maddison’s desire to come to the club stood out to the Aussie coach, with the former Foxes star keen on being ‘the creative director’ of the new-look Spurs side.
The Athletic add that Postecoglou could hear ‘that hunger in his voice’ with the midfielder being ‘all-in’, which is why the 58-year-old decided to build the team around him.
Spurs Web Opinion
It has been widely reported that Postecoglou values players’ personalities just as much as he does their talent, and so one would imagine that in Maddison, he saw someone who is the ideal character to be one of the main fulcrums of the side.
The fact that the Aussie coach made the midfielder his vice-captain even though he had just arrived, shows how impressed he was with the midfielder’s character.
