If Tottenham Hotspur can qualify for the Champions League this season, financial expert Kieran Maguire believes the North London side could end up with the highest matchday revenue of any Premier League club next season.
It’s safe to say Tottenham are flourishing economically these days. With the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium bringing in incredible revenue and the club operating shrewdly in the transfer market, Spurs are now one of the strongest side in the Premier League when it comes to financial power.
In a recent study from Deloitte, Spurs were ranked eighth in the world for the most revenue across the big football clubs, surpassing London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, with an annual income of £538m in the 2022/23 campaign.
It has been said that Spurs, given their financial stability, are able to navigate Financial Fair Play rules comfortably and that chairman Daniel Levy is using this position of strength to his advantage in the transfer market (Standard).
Big money heading Tottenham’s way
Now, if the club can put together a real push for the top four in the second half of the current season and secure Champions League football for next year, it could put Spurs at the top of the tree when it comes to matchday income.
That’s according to Kieran Maguire, who told Football Insider that Levy deserves real credit for the commercial success at the club.
Tottenham’s £115m matchday revenue last season was a new club record, but Manchester United pipped them to top spot in the league with earnings of £129m, but that could all change next season.
On the matter, Maguire said: “He has grown the club’s ability to be multifunctional and own a very attractive piece of real estate in the form of the new White Hart Lane Stadium. That has paid off and Spurs now have the second-highest matchday revenues, only behind that of Manchester United.
“In a good year – if they qualify for the Champions League – there’s no reason why they couldn’t overtake United and have the highest matchday revenue. It’s a testament to their growth – they’ve gone from having £35million a year in matchday earnings to well over £100million.
“That then improves their ability to compete in the transfer market and in terms of player wages.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s great to see the club thriving financially, and this kind of success could and should help the team evolve into a formidable force in the Premier League, and hopefully Europe, too. The commercial success simply has to translate to on-field success sooner rather than later.
