Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire has said that Tottenham are the best-run club across the Premier League in terms of finances but opined that their lack of on-field success counts against the club’s hierarchy.
No one can deny the progress that Spurs have made both on and off the pitch since ENIC and Daniel Levy acquired the club over two decades ago.
Tottenham have gone from a mid-table side to one that regularly competes in the top end of the Premier League table.
The Lilywhites are now considered part of the ‘big six’, not just because of their consistent European finishes but also because they have closed the significant financial gap that existed between them and the old ‘big four’ (Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City), thanks in part to their new stadium.
As per Deloitte’s 2024 Football Money League, Tottenham ranked eighth in world football in terms of revenue generation with £549million across 2023.
Tottenham are the best-run club in the Premier League
While Maguire acknowledged that it was a significant achievement, he pointed out that it needs to translate to on-pitch success.
He told Football Insider: “Spurs are the best-run business in the Premier League by a significant way. But that ignores a key performance indicator – winning trophies.
“From a fan’s perspective, clearly that’s an absolutely critical issue. But as a business, they are consistently coming in with a wages-to-revenue ratio of below 50 per cent and that was even before they moved to the new stadium. The new stadium has allowed them to increase their investment in players.”
“They do have a business model which can be frustrating for other stakeholders in the club, especially fans who want to see success on the pitch. But in my view, they are the best in the Premier League when viewed as a business.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that the Tottenham hierarchy deserves a portion of the blame for the club’s inability to get over the final hurdle on numerous occasions and get their hands on silverware.
However, I do not agree with the conclusion that trophies are the only way to measure on-pitch success. The fact that Tottenham have established themselves as Champions League/Europa League regulars over the last decade and a half also counts as on-pitch success.
While we would all of course love to see the club win silverware, I do not think it is fair to entirely blame the hierarchy, the board or the chairman for the fact that we have regularly fallen short in semifinals and finals of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Fans will do well to consider that the last time we won a trophy was in 2008, with Juande Ramos winning a League Cup with a side that finished 11th in the Premier League that season. The fact that multiple Spurs manages have failed to win trophies with much much better sides surely cannot be entirely on Levy.
