Football London’s Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham decided to rebuff several approaches from EFL sides for young striker Will Lankshear during the January window.
Several Spurs academy youngsters were loaned out to the lower leagues to get regular game time in January, with Ashley Phillips joining Plymouth Argyle, Mathew Craig making a temporary move to League Two side Doncaster Rovers and young goalkeeper Josh Keeley joining non-league side Barnet.
In addition, Tottenham also decided to recall Alfie Devine from his spell at Port Vale and send him to Plymouth so that he could test himself in the Championship.
Spurs decided against loaning Lankshear
Some might have expected the Lilywhites to also allow Lankshear to leave so that he could get some competitive football under his belt.
The centre-forward has been on fire for Tottenham’s Under-21s this season, with 10 goals in 12 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
However, the 18-year-old ended up staying put at Hotspur Way and it was not down to a lack of interest, with Gold revealing that a number of sides from England as well as from the continent were keen on signing the striker.
The journalist explained that Tottenham decided that it would be better for Lankshear’s development to remain at Hotspur Way and get involved in some first-team training sessions.
Spurs Web Opinion
Lankshear is younger and less experienced than the likes of Alfie Devine and Ashley Phillips, which is why Spurs might have felt that it was too early to send him to the lower leagues. One would expect Tottenham to send the 18-year-old out on loan next season.
