Alasdair Gold has said that he suspects Tottenham have signed Timo Werner as a long-term option rather than just as a player to beef up the squad for the second half of the season.
While Werner’s arrival at Tottenham might not have got the fan base exploding with delight, it was widely recognised as a smart deal.
With the forward joining on loan until the end of the season and with the Lilywhites having to option to sign him permanently for £15m, it is certainly a risk-free transfer for Ange Postecoglou’s men.
The hope among Spurs fans is that the Australian coach would be able to get the best out of the German international, whose tireless pressing off the ball and directness make him a good fit for Tottenham’s system.
The concern around Werner would perhaps have to do with the fact that he is not always the most clinical in the final third, an issue which proved his undoing at Chelsea.
Tottenham will likely keep Werner permanently in the summer
However, Gold believes that from the way both the on-loan RB Leipzig star and Postecoglou have spoken, Tottenham’s idea is to exercise the option to buy.
The journalist told The Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “I don’t get the impression that Postecoglou takes people to have them for a few months kind of guy.
“He wants people invested in the system, even Werner, the words around, the way Werner is speaking and the way Postecoglou speaks about him, it sounds like they’re already thinking he’s there for the long-term rather than just this season.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Given that the option to buy stands at a modest £15m, Werner would have to flop pretty miserably for Spurs to not consider activating it. Even if the 27-year-old nets around five or six goals and sets up another couple, one would think that the Lilywhites would be tempted to take up the option.
