Alasdair Gold has admitted that he expected Bryan Gil to depart Tottenham Hotspur last month, however, explained that the winger is settled at the North London side with the squad being a very tight knit group.
Gil was sent out on loan Valencia and Sevilla respectively in January of 2022 and 2023 and many Tottenham supporters would have expected to make a third successive temporary move mid-season in a bid to play regularly once again.
It was widely reported over the course of last month’s transfer window that several clubs, including the likes of Brighton (Daily Mail) and Lazio (Daniele Trecca), were exploring a loan move for the 22-year-old.
When asked about the player’s decision to stay at Spurs, Ange Postecoglou told Football.London last week that it was not his role to “push people out” of the club and insisted that the Spaniard could have a prominent role over the coming months.
However, Gold has his doubts about whether the Australian is likely to hand too many opportunities to Gil, given the attacking options he now has at his disposal.
The journalist told The Last Word on Spurs pocast: “I was surprised [about Gil staying at Spurs], because there was an option there to go to Brighton, didn’t take it.
“He loves the style of football Postecoglou plays, I think you can’t underestimate how settled he is within this group of Spanish-speaking players Tottenham have got there.
“I think they do everything together, even like today on their day off, I think he and Pedro Porro were in Canary Wharf playing padel together, they’re all very very tight knit.
“I think for him it’s a case, bit like [Ryan] Sessegnon, get to the summer, see what the options are then. But I just have this feeling, there’s so many people in front of him at Spurs right now and whether Ange truly trusts him, I don’t know.”

With Spurs not being in any cup competitions, I do not see where Gil’s minutes are going to come from. The youngster might be reduced to a handful of late cameos off the bench over the next few months, which is why I feel he might rue his decision to remain at the club.
With Heung-min Son now back at the club and Timo Werner having been brought in on loan from RB Leipzig, competition for places is even more difficult for the Spaniard at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Ange having a near full-fit squad available to choose from which will make Gil’s chances even slimmer when Manor Solomon returns from injury.
