Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Brennan Johnson has been working hard at arriving in goalscoring positions at the right time, insisting that the winger is blessed with great technique when he is found in those areas.
While several of the players who arrived through the door at Hotspur Way last summer have hit the ground running and established themselves as key parts of the Tottenham side, the same cannot be said of Johnson.
The 22-year-old is yet to deliver the kind of statement performances that many might have expected from him this season and still appears to be a work in progress in the final third.
However, over the last few weeks, Johnson has demonstrated that he is a very useful option to bring on from the bench, having found the back of the net against both Brentford and Brighton after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Postecoglou explained that those goals are not by accident and his coaching staff work with the attackers on the timing of their runs into the box.
The Australian told Football.London: “Chris Davies has done a lot of work with the front half guys with Maso (Ryan Mason) and a lot of our work is around that, getting our wingers or our players into goalscoring positions.
“Again, it’s the way I’ve set my teams up for a very long time and he’s (Johnson) one that has understood that. It’s different from what he has done and it’s not easy.
“Trying to get that timing right and when you arrive, having a good technique and he has a great technique under pressure. He showed that last week and showed it the last couple of times.
“It becomes really difficult to stop when you get that synergy between our attacking players, so having a goal last week of winger to winger is good because they get rewarded for things we speak about and understand how important it is. And hopefully, that keeps them looking for more growth.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While we may not have yet seen the best of Johnson in a Tottenham shirt, it is quite evident why Postecoglou was so keen on brining the winger to the club as he possesses some terrific attributes.
The 22-year-old is a nightmare to play against, given his work-rate off the ball and his directness on it, and once he finds some confidence, he will give sleepless nights to many defenders.
