A couple of weeks after Neal Maupay and James Maddison exchanged a few words, the Brentford striker has now seemingly reignited the feud by insisting that he found the Tottenham man’s reaction quite funny.
The clash between Spurs and Brentford at the start of the month was quite emotionally charged, with tackles flying through the 90 minutes and the players getting involved in quite a few altercations.
The Tottenham players evidently did not like it when Maupay used James Maddison’s signature darts celebration after giving the Bees the lead in the first half, with the likes of Brennan Johnson mocking the Frenchman when Spurs completed the turnaround at the start of the second period.
The back and forth between the players continued after the final whistle, with Maddison telling TNT Sports (via BBC Sport) that Maupay was copying his celebration as the Brentford striker had not scored enough goals to come up with his own.
James Maddison vs Neal Maupay continues
The former Brighton star hit back on social media, pointing out on Instagram that he has more goals and fewer relegations in his career than the Tottenham midfielder.
Just when it seemed like we had seen the last of the feud, Maupay has now spoken about the Spurs star again, insisting that the 27-year-old made it personal for no reason.
The Frenchman told The Times about Maddison: “He took it really personally, it’s funny. I threw a dart and he got so offended he posted my picture on his Instagram. But if I give a little something, I have got to be able to take it as well.”
Maupay’s antics seemed to fire up the Tottenham players on the day but the forward insisted that his celebration was not the reason for the Lilywhites’ comeback.
He added: “We didn’t lose against Tottenham because of my celebration. They’d be in big trouble in the league if they needed a player to wind them up to win a game.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Top-level athletes often use small things like this as added motivation to drive them on and one can understand why the Tottenham players would have wanted to use Maupay’s celebration as added fuel.
However, the whole incident was much to do about nothing and it is embarrassing that the Brentford star is still speaking about it publicly weeks later.
