A top-four finish is seemingly the target for Spurs this season, but landing in fifth place could be enough for a Premier League team to secure Champions League football for next term, after developments in this year’s European competitions gave English teams a boost.
Historically speaking, teams finishing in the top four of the Premier League have been rewarded with a spot in the Champions League the following year.
It’s something Tottenham fans will be very familiar with, as the team have achieved a top-four finish in five of the last eight seasons. Sadly, that didn’t happen last year, though, and the Lilywhites are desperate to get back into Europe’s top competition.
So far this season, Ange Postecoglou‘s men are right up there challenging at the very top of the league, and currently sit in fifth place.
Will fifth place be enough for Spurs?
That could actually end up being enough, though. As per a change to the Champions League format next season, two nations will be rewarded with an extra spot in the tournament via the league placings this season.
It all depends on how far teams go in this year’s continental competitions, and as it stands Italy lead the way, with Germany behind them. England are in third in the coefficient rankings, but a golden opportunity just presented itself thanks to Frankfurt crashing out of the Europa Conference League.
Now, if Manchester City and Arsenal can get through to the Champions League quarter-finals, the Premier League would be in a strong position to take that extra spot next year.
The chances of this would be boosted further if the three German teams in the Champions League right now—Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund—were all to be eliminated. All three teams lost the first leg of their second-round ties.
Spurs Web Opinion
I don’t like the idea of our hopes hanging on other teams, so the Spurs team just need to focus on breaking into that top four this season. If it happens that fifth is enough, great, but we obviously want to be aiming higher than that anyway.
