Heurelho Gomes has been speaking to the Dutch media lately about his time with PSV Eindhoven, and how his affection for that club stood in the way of him ever truly developing a firm relationship with Tottenham Hotspur.
Throughout the history of Tottenham‘s goalkeepers, few have been quite as eccentric and memorable as Heurelho Gomes.
The Brazilian stopper signed for Spurs in the summer of 2008, from PSV, and went on to make 134 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt) before leaving for Watford in 2014.
Gomes couldn’t forget about PSV
Speaking to RTL 7, relayed by Voetbal4U Gomes explained how his love for PSV Eindhoven prevented him ever truly settling in London and at Spurs during his time with the club.
He said: “Every time I’m back [at PSV] it’s good. Last year I went for the 110th anniversary. I tried to get to the stadium for the game against Rangers, but that was extremely difficult. I thought I would be able to walk past the people, but that didn’t really work, haha. It was also a beautiful feeling.
“I left in 2008, but my heart remained in Eindhoven for a long time. That’s why it was so difficult for me to get used to Tottenham, precisely because of that.
“My body left the club, but my heart stayed in Eindhoven. The club remains special to me because of what we have achieved. And I feel at home there. Every time I come to PSV; I feel like I’m dreaming. Eindhoven still feels like home.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s not a bad thing to have affection for a former club despite signing for a new one, and I think that’s always likely to happen more often for players who travel overseas to play in the Premier League. Still, Gomes did a good job at Spurs, and will be remembered fondly, by and large.
