The print edition of Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) have explained that Frenkie de Jong’s camp have been assured that the midfielder has a future at Barcelona after the likes of Tottenham Hotspur expressed an interest in his services.
Earlier this month, it emerged that Tottenham had informed Barca they would be willing to pay €60m (£51.3) for De Jong when the transfer window opens in June (Jijantes FC).
Other Spanish outlets have since also carried similar rumours about the Dutchman’s future and as a result, it was reported by Sport a couple of days ago that the midfielder’s agent, Ali Dursun, met with Barca’s director of football, Deco, to discuss the player’s future.
The report explained that lasted around an hour and a half and had a ‘positive tone and goodwill’ to the parties.
Barcelona react to Tottenham’s interest in De Jong
The same publication (Sport) has now provided further details on De Jong’s future and the assurances that the midfielder’s camp was given in the aforementioned meeting.
They state the top European clubs ‘don’t take their eyes off’ the 27-year-old star, with Spurs and Paris Saint-Germain named among the contenders for the player’s signature.
The report claims that the North London club and the Ligue 1 giants have knocked on the former Ajax man’s door and are ‘positioned to acquire’ his services in the summer.
However, it is alleged that it might not be easy to get De Jong out of Catalonia as Deco assured the midfielder’s agent his client is the ‘present and future of Barcelona’.

To me, these rumours about De Jong’s future seem like it has been leaked by Barca to the press in an effort to get the midfielder to accept a reduced contract.
The La Liga giants certainly have previous for this and it is very much possible that they would go back on their word and shop list the 26-year-old, given their financial situation.
