Eric Dier has admitted that he feels he should get more respect from English football fans, given what he has achieved in his career so far.
Dier was a mainstay of the best Tottenham side in the Premier League era for nearly a decade, having made nearly 363 appearances for the club, which puts him in seventh place on Tottenham’s all-time appearance list.
The centre-back has also been a key part of an England side that has done better in major tournaments than any side since 1966, having won 49 caps for the Three Lions.
Yet, the 30-year-old is often derided on social media by fans, with some almost treating him as a joke, particularly over the last couple of years.
Eric Dier feels underappreciated in England
Dier has now said that he feels much more appreciated abroad than in England. The former Tottenham man told The Times: “I’ve always felt I’m perhaps more appreciated in Portugal than in England. I’m perhaps not spoken about with the respect I should be with regard to what I’ve done in my career.
“I wouldn’t say the perception of me is positive [in England]. But I don’t feel sorry for myself in the slightest. I know what I’ve done. I know what I haven’t done. No one’s more critical of me than myself.
“It is funny how, abroad, I do tend to receive that appreciation more than at home. I really feel, here in Germany, the club’s appreciation for me.”
Dier suggested that much like an old piece of furniture, he had been at Tottenham for so long that he was no longer appreciated.
He said about his treatment at Spurs: “It’s like that chair in your living room that you’ve had for 9½ years and you don’t appreciate it in the same way.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Football fans tend to have short memories and many have forgotten just how important Dier was at various points under the likes of Pochettino, Mourinho and Conte, having had some excellent spells under all those managers.
There is an unfortunate trend on social media of ridiculing top players and talking about them as if they are a complete joke and cannot even kick a ball.
The reality is that anybody who makes it to the Premier League level is an exceptional footballer, let alone someone like Dier, who has played so many years at the top level.
