Jamie O’Hara has expressed his confusion over Ange Postecoglou’s decision to substitute James Maddison in the draw against West Ham this week, and suggests the Spurs midfielder should be ‘knocking on the door’ of his manager to discuss the situation.
James Maddison has been one of Tottenham‘s star signings this season, bringing creativity and a sense of leadership to the ranks of Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.
With four goals and eight assists so far this season, Maddison’s contributions are clear to see (Transfermarkt). However, injuries have held the England international back at times this term.
He’s back in the starting lineup now, and is clearly trying to get back to his best. But, Postecoglou has taken Maddison off around the 70-minute mark in the last three Premier League matches.
This was particularly odd in the last game against West Ham on Tuesday night. Spurs were starting to open up the game, and Maddison was beginning to pull the strings, but he was swapped out for Dejan Kulusevski.
James Maddison should be frustrated at Spurs substitutions
Speaking on The Sports Bar (via talkSPORT), O’Hara touched on the issue, and claimed Maddison has every right to feel frustrated that he is not being allowed to play a full game lately.
He said: “[Maddison] didn’t look happy. He’s not one to throw his toys out of the pram and he holds himself quite well when he gets dragged.
“But he doesn’t look the happiest, getting taken off. It was a strange one in a game like that. It was opening up and at the end, it was like a basketball match.
“Maddison is the guy you want on the ball in a moment where you need one killer pass. The subs didn’t change the game. I get that you want fresh legs. But why Maddison every week? I don’t get it.
“If I’m James Maddison now, and I’d been taken off before the 70th minute for three games in a row, I would be knocking on [Postecoglou’s] door.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I can only assume that Maddison is not 100% fit, because that switch in the West Ham game did seem a weird choice. That said, Maddison hasn’t quite been at his best of late, and maybe Ange is wanting to see more from him.
