As Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham Hotspur draws to a close, a place in next season’s Champions League is looking likely. For James Maddison, the club being a part of that competition is ‘non-negotiable,’ and next up is a title challenge for the Lilywhites.
Maddison has clearly enjoyed his first year with Tottenham, registering four goals and seven assists so far this term (Transfermarkt).
After the win over Nottingham Forest yesterday, Spurs are now fourth in the Premier League, and have a game in hand on fifth-placed Aston Villa.
While the English top flight is expected to receive an extra spot in next year’s Champions League through the coefficient rankings, Spurs are eager to finish as high as possible and make sure there is no doubt as to which European competition they play in next season.
Title challenge on the horizon for Spurs
For Maddison, anything less than Champions League football would be unacceptable for Spurs, and the playmaker also has an eye on mounting a title challenge in the near future.
Speaking to Standard Sport, he said: “I get the manager not wanting to talk about [finishing in the top four], but I am not going to lie to your face and say you don’t think about that, because we want to be in the Champions League.
“This club needs to be in the Champions League, [it’s] non-negotiable really, and that’s the aim. That’s why we’ll try to finish strong and get that.”
When asked about the idea of a title challenge next year, Maddison added: “That’s definitely the feeling. It’s annoying listening to three teams go at it for the title and we’re not in it… Everyone is locked into the Premier League every week, because it’s such a good title race. Frustrating not to be a part of that, but we are where we are and we have our own job to do.”

He’s bang on here. We could and should be a part of the title race, and we have to make sure we are more consistent and clinical next season to be involved in that conversation.
