Destiny Udogie’s agent Stefano Antonelli has credited Fabio Paratici for the signing of his client, suggesting that the left-back would have been signed by one of the Serie A giants had Tottenham waited.
While most of Paratici’s signings at Spurs have been hits, the acquisition of Udogie is arguably one of the best decisions that the Italian man during his time as managing director of Tottenham.
The Lilywhites secured the left-back in the summer of 2022 at a time when he was still a relatively unknown quantity and loaned him back to Udinese for the 2022-23 season.
That proved to be a masterstroke as the Italy international arrived with a little more experience and maturity at Hotspur Way last summer, and he has hit the ground running at N17.
The 21-year-old looks made for the Premier League and appears to be getting better and better in the inverted full-back role as he gets more games under his belt.
Paratici did well to land Destiny Udogie for Spurs
Udogie looks set to play a key part in Italy’s European Championship campaign this summer and Antonelli believes that the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan could have swooped for his client if the Premier League side had waited.
The Tottenham man’s agent told TuttoMercatoWeb: “Football is made up of moments. At that moment, Paratici was very good at removing him from the market and then leaving him on loan to Udinese. He didn’t leave him for Juventus or Inter.
“If another year had passed, I’m sure Inter or Juventus would have signed him, but that wasn’t the time for them to spend the €25m that Tottenham paid.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Out of all the excellent acquisitions Paratici made during his time in charge, the Udogie and Pape Sarr ones have been the biggest masterstrokes as both were relative unknowns at the time and the signings seemed like a stab in the dark.
However, the way the duo have developed since then has more than vindicated the Italian’s judgment and talent identification. It is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that any team in world football would now take the midfielder and the left-back.
