Eric Dier has admitted that he has regrets about not doing more to help Dele Alli when the midfielder was struggling a few years ago, revealing that he was not fully aware of his former Tottenham teammate’s problems at the time.
During his appearance on The Overlap last year, Dele opened up on his mental health struggles and admitted that he had even become addicted to sleeping tablets and drinking to ‘escape from reality’.
The Everton star revealed that he had to check into rehab to overcome the issue and even opened up on his childhood trauma, confessing that he was sexually assaulted when he was a kid.
Eric Dier wishes he did more for Dele Alli
Dier, who is an extremely close friend of Dele’s, admitted that he was not aware of the full picture when the pair were together at Spurs.
When asked how he felt when listening to his friend’s admission, the Bayern Munich star told The Overlap: “I’m disappointed that I didn’t do more. In many situations that I look back on I wasn’t aware of the full picture and there’s a lot of things.
“I was that annoying older person, I would always be on his case so he would hide things from me, or tell me something but give just 20 per cent of it. I have a lot of regrets and there were certain times that I wish I did more.”
The 30-year-old revealed that he could not even bring himself to watch the whole Dele interview but confirmed that they remain good friends.
Dier added: “It’s difficult for me to talk about Dele. I speak to him all the time, every week, obviously, it was just very difficult to watch.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the whole video, I’ve seen bits of it but it’s difficult for me to watch, he said some nice things about me, but it works both ways – he’s also been a great friend to me. Dele is a special person.”

One can understand the guilt Dier would feel when listening to a close friend open up about his struggles. One would hope that the 27-year-old is able to get his career back on track now that he has made significant steps towards overcoming his problems.
