Yves Bissouma has come in for some criticism from Spurs fans of late, but the midfielder has been very forthcoming in admitting he makes mistakes and is trying to learn from them, and insists he is enjoying his football regardless.
Signed from Brighton in the summer of 2022, Bissouma came to Tottenham with big expectations after impressing for the Seagulls.
However, he had a tough time of it under Antonio Conte, struggling to adapt to the Italian’s tactics and also missing games through injury.
This season began in a very different manner, though. Bissouma appeared rejuvenated in the early stages of this campaign and seemed perfect for Ange Postecoglou‘s system.
Since the turn of the year, Bissouma’s form has been called into question, though, with the Malian misplacing passes and failing to offer the kind of protection for the defence he was displaying at the start of the season.
Yves Bissouma promises there’s more to come
Bissouma discussed this in the latest matchday programme, saying: “This season started really good. Then after we were restricted because of a lot of injuries and suspensions, that put us in a difficult position.
“Sometimes I make mistakes, because I’m not perfect and still learning, so I know there’s more to come, but I’m happy and enjoying this role in the team.
“I have to enjoy this moment and make the most of it as it’s where I’m fully in control, where I feel strong and feel like myself. I feel free, so I’m enjoying my moment but, in the end, I don’t want to have any regrets so I always fight to feel good.”
On his role under Postecoglou, Bissouma added: “It’s the way I like to play and it’s always good because it suits my style. l really like to receive the ball, turn and try to find a solution.
“If it’s not on then I’ll dribble to make space and find a solution. My role is to get the ball and try to find a solution for my teammates It’s really fun, I’m enjoying this role a lot.
“To be on the pitch in the Premier League is great for me because I’m in one of the best leagues in the world. I’ve worked over the years to hone my style of play and I want to continue playing in this way.”
Spurs Web Opinion
When he’s at his best, Bissouma is the ideal number 6 player we need, but he has to be more consistent. Hopefully, he can end the season strong, otherwise we will likely sign someone to replace him in the starting XI.
