Eric Dier has admitted that he is surprised by the kind of criticism Daniel Levy gets, given the way he has built up Spurs off the pitch.
While Levy might not be universally unpopular among Spurs fans, there is certainly a huge chunk of the fan base who are extremely critical of the Tottenham chairman.
Many of them lay the blame for the club’s inability to win silverware since 2008 entirely on Levy’s feet and accuse him of caring only about profits instead of success.
That is an accusation that the 62-year-old himself has shot back against, insisting that he is desperate to win silverware, giving that as the reason why he went for two ‘win-first’ managers in Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho (Reuters).
However, the one thing that cannot be argued is the fact that Levy has done an exceptional job off the pitch, closing the financial gap between Tottenham and the old ‘big four’ and ensuring that the club would be able to go toe-to-toe with Europe’s elite clubs over the long-term.
Eric Dier cannot understand the Daniel Levy criticism
Dier confessed that he is at a loss as to why Levy is so heavily criticised, given the things he has delivered in his two decades in charge.
The centre-back told The Overlap: “When I see the way people talk about the chairman it’s a bit baffling to me when it comes to like, he takes such good care of that club, you know, from a business point of view.
“He takes such good care of that, you never see Tottenham in like a Financial Fair Play discussion, and they built a new stadium, a new training ground, I think they have the best infrastructure in the world in terms of football.
“And then obviously on a football side we can spend a few Overlaps discussing it because I was there a long time and we went through many different kinds of regimes, we had the Pochettino era and then the different managers who came after that.”

The job of the Tottenham board, the chairman and the rest of the hierarchy is to ensure there is a competitive team. Despite having to build a billion-pound stadium, over the last decade, Spurs have been as competitive as they have been for a long time.
While Levy certainly deserves plenty of criticism for some of the decisions he has made, it seems quite unfair that he is held solely responsible by some for the team’s inability to win the semifinals and finals.
