There are some who still try to claim Cristian Romero is a reckless and dirty footballer, but Ange Postecoglou disagrees. In his latest press conference, the Spurs boss hailed his defender for his disciplinary record this season.

Cristian Romero continues to get better and better, it seems. He has already proven himself to be one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League, and has also won the World Cup, leading some to claim he may be up there as one of the best in his position in the whole world.

He’s had a fine season for Spurs, too. Not only has he been a steady presence at the back for Ange Postecoglou‘s side, but he has also bagged five goals, including a goal against Arsenal at the weekend.

The only apparent downside to his game, at least in the past, was a penchant for an overly-passionate challenge, leading to a fairly poor disciplinary record over the last two campaigns.

But, this season, he has just one red card — in that infamous defeat against Chelsea in November — and six yellows. He has just two bookings since the turn of the year.

Postecoglou has no issue with Romero

With these massive improvements in mind, Football.London discussed Romero’s discipline with Postecoglou, who had nothing but positive things to say on the matter.

“On reflection, when you look at the challenge he got sent off for, I’ve seen half a dozen since so he maybe paid a price for being who he is,” Postecoglou said.

“I haven’t had an issue with his discipline all year. That game we started well, we were flying. I haven’t had an issue. If historically it was different, it wasn’t under my watch. He’s been fantastic this year,” he added.

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero has arguably been our best, most consistent player this season. The way he has added a composure and maturity to his game is commendable, and has made him an even better defender for sure.
