In his latest press conference today, Ange Postecolgou took time to comment on the way Guglielmo Vicario is being targeted by the opposition at set-pieces this season, and insists he is trying to get some kind of ‘clarity’ on the rules regarding this.
Guglielmo Vicario has had a great first season at Spurs, and has absolutely established himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League already.
Despite making a number of very important saves throughout the season, and keeping seven clean sheets in all competitions, there has still been a fair bit of criticism thrown his way.
That’s because Spurs are conceding a lot of goals from set-pieces in this second half of the campaign, with opposition players targeting Vicario in the Tottenham goal when it comes to corner kicks and free-kick deliveries.
By obstructing Vicario, opponents like Everton, West Ham, and Arsenal have been able to score fairly simple headers against Tottenham and take points off the Lilywhites.
Postecoglou is not happy with treatment of Vicario
Speaking to the press (via Football.London), the Spurs boss was asked about this approach from the opposition and what he feels is the right course of action to find a resolution.
Postecoglou said: “I think he’s seen that there’s a challenge. It’s something that even I’m struggling with because I watched the Champions League last night and there was a foul given on the keeper straight away. We’re trying to get clarity on it.”

Something has to be done about this, and I expect a rule change will come into place for next season. You wouldn’t be allowed to push an outfield player around like they are doing to Vicario, and he certainly wouldn’t be allowed to do the same to the opponent, either. It seems like referees are literally ignoring what’s going on.
