As we head into the final round of Premier League fixtures, we know now that Spurs will finish either fifth or sixth in the table, and it is clear what they need to do in order to confirm that higher position and claim Europa League football.
After an electric start to the Premier League season, it seemed Tottenham might actually find themselves involved in the title race this year.
It wasn’t to be though, and a poor run of form over the last month has seen the Lilywhites relinquish the chance to claim a top four spot and miss out on Champions League football next season.
Ange Postecoglou now has one game left to bring the campaign to a positive end, with a trip to relegated Sheffield United on Sunday.
What do Spurs need to do on Sunday to claim fifth place?
With Tottenham in fifth place, there’s still a lot to play for, as Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are all chasing European qualification, too.
Manchester United beat Newcastle last night in a 3-2 thriller to move level on points with the Magpies, but the latter still have a far superior goal difference.
Meanwhile, Chelsea continued their resurgence under Mauricio Pochettino and now sit in sixth place, just three points behind Spurs going into the final day.
So, for Tottenham to bag that fifth spot and certain qualification for next year’s Europa League, it is simple: win or draw against Sheffield United, and it’s confirmed regardless of Chelsea’s result against Bournemouth.
However, if Chelsea win and Spurs lose, Chelsea would climb into the top five on goal difference. Sixth place may still be enough for Europa League football, but if Manchester United win the FA Cup at the end of the month, they would replace the sixth place team in the competition next year, with Conference League football awaiting sixth place instead.
Spurs Web Opinion
To be honest, none of this should matter. We simply have to beat Sheffield United, and we should get that result anyway. If we lose that, then we don’t deserve to be playing European football at all.
