Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is set to be bestowed with an extremely prestigious award for his contribution to the city of London.

The Tottenham supremo is the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League by far, having been in charge of the North London side since ENIC’s takeover in 2021.

He is a controversial figure among the Spurs fan base and not very popular among large swaths of supporters, as demonstrated by the fact that Tottenham fans protested in the thousands, calling for Levy to leave last season.

Levy was also booed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the Europa League win, which shows that the European success has not done much to improve his popularity.

Daniel Levy’s contributions to London are set to be recognised

The Standard have now revealed that Levy is set to be given the Freedom of the City of London, which is granted by the City of London Corporation.

The Spurs chairman was nominated at a City of London meeting on Wednesday and is expected to receive the honour at a ceremony at Guildhall later this year.

This award recognises individuals for their contributions to the city and “pays tribute to their outstanding contribution to London or public life”.

The 63-year-old oversaw the building of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has transformed that part of North London, which now boasts one of the best sporting and concert venues in the world.

A deserved recognition for Levy

The jury is still out on Daniel Levy’s work at Tottenham, and one can understand why some Spurs fans believe he has been a failure as a chairman.

Levy will argue that he has helped build the club into one of the richest in Europe, but the fact that Tottenham have won only two trophies during his tenure remains a big black mark against him.

However, irrespective of his impact at Spurs, there is no denying that the decisions he has made have been transformative for the area of Tottenham Hotspur and the small businesses in the locality.
