Tottenham fans will love what Cristian Romero just said about Micky van de Ven partnership
Cristian Romero has spoken about the relationship he has forged with his Tottenham centre-back partner Micky van de Ven, and what he hopes to happen this season.
Romero is now starting on a new journey at Tottenham, having been appointed captain of the club following the departure of Heung-min Son.
The Argentine has signed a new four-year deal with Spurs, thus putting an end to the speculation over his future and showing his commitment to the North London club.
Thomas Frank has said he expects Romero to grow with the additional leadership responsibility, and the 27-year-old has now admitted that he loves playing with his centre-back partner at N17.
Cristian Romero admits he shares a great connection with Tottenham teammate Micky van de Ven
Van de Ven and Romero have now played together for two seasons, and the World Cup winner admits that the pair have been able to forge a great relationship.
The Tottenham captain revealed that he and the Dutchman now understand each other’s games very well and hoped that they would play together more often than they were able to last campaign.
When asked about playing alongside Van de Ven, Romero told Telemundo Deportes: “We have a great relationship since the day he arrived. We made a good central duo, and nothing is perfect; there are always things to improve. But we know each other, we know each other’s way of playing, so we complement each other very well.
“As I said, last season, unfortunately, both he and I suffered so many injuries that we missed almost 50 per cent of the season, and that’s hard for the coach, for the team and everyone. So, this season, we hope not to have that bad luck and be able to be well to face this season in the best way possible.”
Why we might see Romero and Van de Ven play a lot more games this season
One of the factors behind the terrible injury record Tottenham had over the last two seasons was the demands of Ange Postecoglou’s style.
Spurs players averaged more sprints per game than any other Premier League side last season, with the Australian’s system asking a lot of the players both in and out of possession.
Under Frank, Tottenham will be happier to sit in a mid or even a low block during some phases of the game, which should help their key players pick up fewer muscle injuries than last season.
