Chris Waddle tells Tottenham to spend £100m investment on one exciting player
Spurs legend Chris Waddle believes that Tottenham Hotspur should spend ENIC’s £100m cash injection on one rising star.
Earlier this month, Tottenham’s majority owners injected £100m equity into the club after rejecting multiple takeover interests in the club.
Many saw that as a sign that ENIC are putting their money where their mouth is after the Lewis family stated that they want to usher in a new era of on-pitch success at Spurs.
According to reports, ENIC are ready to do away with Tottenham’s restrictive wage cap in an attempt to compete for the signing of big-name players.
Chris Waddle names ‘ideal’ attacking signing for Tottenham
Over the past few weeks, a number of outlets have stated that Tottenham could spend big on a centre-forward in January.
Waddle acknowledged that Spurs have a weakness in the number nine role, which they have to sort out, but insisted that they should spend their transfer budget on Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.
Waddle told Boyle Sports: “Tottenham look okay, but the problem is at the top end. Dominic Solanke is injured. I can see why Harry Kane’s name keeps coming up because they do need a number nine. Solanke gets going and looks sharp, then he gets injured again. He hasn’t had the best of luck at Spurs, so it’s been hard to judge his performances.
“They also need another creative midfielder. James Maddison obviously did his cruciate. I thought they would have got Eberechi Eze from Palace, but he went to Arsenal. Someone of that type would be a handy player in midfield, playing behind a number nine. If you’re looking to strengthen the team, you need a centre forward and a really good playmaker.
“Antoine Semenyo would be ideal – they need someone who can carry the ball and make something happen. And who’s putting the ball in the net? They’ll be lucky if they get 12-13 goals from their top scorer at the end of the season. Tottenham need a centre forward who’s going to get 20 to 25 goals. We’ll see if Solanke can do a job when he gets fit.
“The one thing they lack is a goalscorer and definitely a really creative footballer. Kudus has done really well on the right. If they could get Semenyo on the left, that would be a good frontline if they could get a centre forward in there.”
How much would Spurs need to spend on Antoine Semenyo?
Tottenham have been credited with an interest in Semenyo ahead of January, but the Lilywhites will not find it easy to secure the winger.
Some sources have suggested that Bouremouth want £80m for the Spurs target, who is also thought to be on the radars of several other Premier League clubs.
However, we have also heard from a few outlets that Semenyo has an undisclosed release clause in his contract, which he signed at the Vitality Stadium back in the summer.
