Thomas Frank hints at squad rotation for Tottenham’s trip to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup

0

Thomas Frank has now explained the rationale behind his Tottenham squad rotation, also opening up on the latest tactical tweak involving Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus.

Thomas Frank has shown that he is not shy to ring the changes in his side ahead of key fixtures, as Tottenham Hotspur continue to compete on multiple fronts this season.

Last time out, Frank made several adjustments to both personnel and tactical setup, a move that ultimately helped his side grab their first win since their victory over Leeds United before the international break.

Randal Kolo Muani earned his first start, Xavi Simons was deployed on the left, while Brennan Johnson took up a role on Tottenham’s right flank, as Thomas Frank sought a response from his Tottenham side.

Thomas Frank opens up on Tottenham squad rotation

More changes should be expected on Wednesday night when Tottenham line up against Newcastle United, and Thomas Frank has now spoken about his approach to squad rotation as Spurs boss.

Reflecting on the challenges of managing such a demanding schedule, Frank explained that rotation is essential if Tottenham are to remain competitive across multiple competitions.

Speaking to the club media, he said, “That is the challenge. It is one game, so there is more at stake. I changed four from Monaco to Everton and three before that.

“Of course, there will be rotation, playing every third or fourth day. If you want to compete over 60 games, you cannot play the same XI. So there is a fine balance. That is one of the beauties of being Head Coach, that is all part of the good fun.”

Frank speaks on Kudus and Simons tweak against Everton

There were also a few tactical tweaks against Everton, with Mohammed Kudus operating more centrally alongside Xavi Simons, who drifted into central zones when Tottenham had possession.

These sorts of tactical adjustments and positional flexibility were hallmarks of Frank’s Brentford side, and there is little doubt they played a part in Tottenham’s decision to bring him to north London.

The Dane has now shed light on that particular tactical change involving Simons and Kudus, explaining the reasoning behind the shift.

He said, “Sometimes I tweak it a little bit. Having Kudus in the middle to link with Xavi, there were elements of good things.”
