Yet despite the disappointment of their team going 2-0 down, they still stood to applaud their fellow countryman’s stupendous strike.
Silva came through the Portuguese ranks at Sporting’s rivals Benfica before leaving for Monaco in 2014.
He then joined Man City in 2017 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in the world.

The goal was Silva’s ninth of the season in 33 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s English champions.
It came after Mahrez tapped home to give City the lead in the eighth minute.
Silva then netted the Premier League leaders’ second, before Phil Foden made it three shortly after the half hour mark.
And Silva reached double figures for the campaign before half-time as Raheem Sterling put a fourth on a plate for City.
Guardiola’s men are the favourites to win this season’s Champions League as they go in search of an elusive first European crown.
