I’m a vet – the 6 dog breeds a first-time dog owner should never get, it could end in catastrophe
ACCORDING to a survey by the ASPCA, Americans have adopted over 23 million dogs since 2020.
One veterinarian warns that some breeds are not for first-time dog owners.
Amir Anwary is a vet based in South Africa who took to TikTok to advise viewers on dog breeds that first-time dog owners should avoid.
Anwary danced to a remix of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” as text listing the dog breed names flashed on the screen.
He named six dog breeds that he deemed better fit for experienced dog owners.
First, he named the Belgian Malinois, a herding dog, as a dog to avoid if you’ve never owned one before.

“My first dog was a Malinois and I wouldn’t trade that psycho for anything,” one commenter wrote.
“As long as you know he’s a psycho,” Anwary replied.
He advised against adopting a Dalmatian as a first-time dog owner as well.
Anwary also listed the cuddly but high-maintenance Chow Chow.

“Most first-time owners don’t know what to expect,” he wrote in a comment. “They should rather adopt breeds that aren’t high maintenance.”
Some breeds were givens, such as the more aggressive Rottweiler breed.
However, he also listed the Border collie, another herding dog, best known for its role as the calm-tempered Lassie.
He defended his choice to keep herding dogs on the list in a comment.
“[Herding dogs] are way too smart and need too much attention!” he wrote.
Finally, he deemed the wrinkly guard breed Shar Pei as unfit for a first-time owner.
“Most people don’t educate themselves before getting a pet,” he said. “Thus (sic) video is intended to stop a catastrophe.”
