Handyman scoops award for his bizarre hobby – photographing bins
A HANDYMAN has scooped an award for his rubbish hobby — taking photographs of bins.
David Clark, 52, dubbed Dustbin Dave, is honoured to be named Anorak of the Year by the Dull Men’s Club.
He has amassed more than 10,000 bin snaps in the past four years, many sent in by fellow enthusiasts around the world.
He said: “Every bin has a unique quality — maybe that one has a decent-sized opening.” His interest began when he was seven.
He recalled: “I was fascinated going down the tip and watching the bin men collecting. Then one day I saw a bin designed like a Fab lolly. That blew me away.”
Dave started taking photos of bins on his travels — and the arrival of the internet told him others shared his trashy obsession.
He began posting his snaps online and soon others, including from Italy, Spain, Australia, the US and Mexico, did the same.
Dave, from Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk, said: “I created a ‘Best of bins’ video which went viral.”
He is fascinated by the variety of colours of wheelie bins in different areas.
He said: “Places like Holland and Denmark have futuristic bins that go underground. They’re so clean there. We’re a bit behind the times.”
Dull Men’s Club founder Grover Click said of Dave: “There’s not a bin you could put in front of him he couldn’t comment on.
“He’s clearly adhering to our motto of celebrating the ordinary.”
