I’m a money-saving mum and here’s the things I never do including my strict laundry rule that some people think is gross
A MONEY-SAVING mum has revealed the five things that she would never do or buy, in order to save money.
Becky Guiles, also known on TikTok as @freebielady, is a money-saving whizz that managed to save enough money to pay off £28,889 of debt in eight months.
Becky has amassed an impressive 514.5k followers and 1.8million likes on the social media app, where she regularly shares her top saving tips and tricks.
She recently took to the video sharing platform to reveal the five things that she wouldn’t do as a money saving whizz and some may shock you.
According to Becky, she never washes clothes after just one wash, will often buy her children second-hand gifts for Christmas and birthdays and never buys branded food items.
She said: “Things I wouldn’t do, or buy, as a money-saving expert.
“Y’all are gonna come after me for some of these in the comments but bring it, I’m ready for it.
“First I would never buy an extended warranty – did someone say rip off?
“The extended warranty industry is a $40billion dollar industry, making billions on the chances that your item is not gonna break.
“I don’t wash my clothes or my family’s clothes if they’ve been worn once. If they’re dirty, I’ll wash them, but unless you’re rolling around in dirt, chances are, your clothes aren’t dirty the first time you wear them.
“If I go somewhere and they ask do I want to round up and donate that money to charity? I say no, here is why. If you’re gonna donate to a charity, donate directly to a charity.
“Anytime they ask you to round up, they the company is getting a financial benefit for you giving the donation to the company and then the company is giving it to the charity.
“This is the one that seems to strike a nerve with someone, I don’t know why but it does. For Christmas or birthdays, I don’t always give my kids brand new gifts, sometimes I buy them used stuff, because they don’t care.
“Let me give you an example – my seven-year-old wanted a telescope for Christmas and how often is a seven-year-old going to use a telescope? The least expensive one I could find anywhere online was $40, so I went on Facebook Marketplace and found one for $5. He’s used it once.
“When I’m grocery shopping, if there’s a generic item next to a named brand item I almost always buy the generic item and here’s why. Generic items and name brand items are often made in the same factory using the same exact formulas.
“What you’re paying for most of the time is just the packaging and the name brand marketing.”
Becky’s video has clearly shocked many, as it has quickly gone viral and has racked up a whopping 1.5million views.
It has 132.8k likes, 2,514 likes and 1,482 shares.
One person said: “I can get down with everything except the clothes—I’ve got to wash the clothes!”
Another added: “The last tip is the best!!!!! People need to have less of the mentality that new is better! Let’s all start getting used items and helping the earth.”
A third commented: “I agree with all except the name brand.. you can definitely tell the difference between home brand and name brand. I always buy the good stuff $$”
