Mum slammed for making a ‘lazy’ dinner for her six-year-old – so can you spot what’s wrong with it?
A MUM has been slammed by other parents after sharing the “lazy dinner” she made her six-year-old.
The woman took to a Facebook group specifically for sharing the low-key meals, as she wrote: “So so lazy.
“Microwave mini corn dogs, leftover mac and cheese, Greek yoghurt with whip and sprinkles, grapes, oranges.
“Stay lazy mamas.”
But people were quick to comment on the meal, criticising the woman for not cutting up the grapes.
“I promise I’m not trying to be mean in any way but please cut your children’s grapes…” one wrote.
“My daughter’s best friend lost her five-year-old brother by choking on a grape,” another added
“I even choked as an adult once. It’s so easy to do,” a third commented.
The mum then responded to the criticism as she wrote: “Thanks for the reminder.
“I usually do. It’s just been a day.
“My youngest is six they just still love the divided plates.”
Advice on how long parents should cut up grapes for varies, but the general suggestion is to do so until at least the age of five.
Nikki Jurcutz, the CEO of parenting organisation Tiny Hearts Education, explained that the reason grapes are so dangerous is because of their shape.
The fruit – and cherry tomatoes – are small and round, so can completely block a child’s airway if they get lodged in the oesophagus.
So, to avoid any risk of choking, cut the grapes up – into quarters preferably – or squash them to change their shape.
Doing so means that even if the grape does get stuck, its modified shape means air can still get into the lungs.
