SICKENED Great British Menu viewers ripped into a ‘repulsive’ dish – raging ‘no way I could eat that!’
The latest episode of the BBC cookery competition saw chefs from Central England make their starter and fish courses.
But one fish dish made by Cambridge-based chef Kareem Roberts horrified viewers at home.
The theme for this year’s competition is inspired by Paddington’s 65th birthday and a celebration of British animation and illustration – from cartoons to comics to computer games.
Kareem based his fish course on Fungus the Bogeyman, a book by Raymond Briggs.
The dish featured a coarse duxelles of mushroom with a veloute of mushrooms and spirulina to enhance the greenness of it.
He also marinated a loin of cod in the green yoghurt made of spinach and seaweed before roasting it and serving it with Messiah mushrooms.
His fellow chefs tried it and were disappointed not to get a punch from the yoghurt, but they liked the cooking of the cod.
However, Great British Menu viewers at home said they wouldn’t let it cross their lips due to its appearance.
One wrote on Twitter: “I genuinely don’t think I could eat anything that was green and had been inspired by a bogey man!”
Another added: “Is it wise to create a dish to remind you of bogeys, though?”
A third tweeted: “I hate fish as it is and that Kareem dish has made me hate it more… looks very unappetising.”
Meanwhile a fourth shared: “That looks just like Fungus the Bogeyman’s food. Repulsive.”
They weren’t alone with their thoughts, as another tweeted: “I found that green plate of food just unattractive, I know it was supposed to look like that but you do eat with your eyes.”
In the end, Kareem’s feedback was that the cod was cooked “brilliantly” but he had “missed a trick” by not adding some spice to the marinade.
He was told not to “get lost in the concept” and to “always keep flavour at the forefront”.
He was scored a seven, and meant that when his scores were combined, he had one point less than his nearest competitor and had to leave the competition.
Great British Menu continues tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
