People are only just realising what those tiny windows in the pavement are for but some still don’t believe it
HAVE you ever noticed those square glass tiles on the pavement and wondered what on earth they’re for? You’re not alone.
Reddit users have been debating the function of the frosted flooring and some people had pretty unique ideas to bring to the table.
One confused forum user posted a picture of the glass squares and posed the question: “Apart from making it a extra slippy when it rains, what are these for?”
The simple question started a lively discussion, with some people refusing to believe the actual use for the glass.
The tiles, which are sometimes referred to as pavement lights, are used to allow natural light into basement rooms.
One the forum, plenty of people flocked to show off their knowledge of the city skylights.
One person said: “Letting light pass through into a basement/cellar.”
Another said: “To let light into the cellar. The building will have been built before the popularisation of electric lighting, so it’s free light rather than using candles that cost money.”

Another said: “Professional Hopscotch tournaments.”
A third said: “I thought it was for the sewer people when I was a kid.”
