I gave my grotty deck a glow-up – a cheap kitchen essential works just as well as expensive restoring solution
A DIY and upcycling professional has revealed her cheap kitchen essential that did wonders on her grotty deck glow-up.
It was so effective she said it worked just as well as a more expensive restoring solution.
The tip came from Claire Douglas Styling (@clairedouglasstyling) who has a healthy following of over 26,000 and another 186,000 likes.
Claire passes on her knowledge through her courses that focus on a “money-saving ‘bespoke on a budget’ approach to home interiors.”
Her TikTok remit is all about “DIY, upcycling, and home styling,” and she put those skills to good effect when it came to giving her deck a much-needed boost.
In this post, she shared her “grotty deck” glow-up and it was some transformation.
“I gave our grotty deck a glow-up,” she said. “[It] was looking really grotty before this revamp.
“I was worried it might be beyond saving but it was completely transformed after a weekend of hard work.”
Tools for the job included a jet washer, a scrubbing brush, decking oil, a bucket, and one unexpected kitchen essential.
“Top tip, Fairy Platinum dish soap, well diluted,” she said. This was her secret weapon.
“Worked just as well as the expensive decking restoring solution.”
Claire, however, had learned her top tip the hard way: “I tried the proper decking cleaner initially which was quite expensive.
“So when I ran out I experimented with washing up liquid instead and it worked just as well.”
Once the cleaning was finished, Claire moved on to the next stage and applied the decking oil.
The transformation was striking and commenters thought so too.
“Oh wow, that looks great,” said this impressed fan in conclusion.
