Boy, 15, charged after ‘hero’ maths teacher Jamie Sansom, 27, stabbed at Tewkesbury school
A BOY has been charged after a “hero” maths teacher was stabbed at a school.
Jamie Sansom, 27, was knifed on Monday at Tewkesbury School, on Ashchurch Road, Gloucestershire.
Cops rushed to the scene around 9am after a 15-year-old pupil allegedly attacked the staff member in a corridor.
Armed police swarmed the school grounds before swiftly arresting the teen and confiscating a knife two hours later.
Gloucestershire Police have now charged him with attempted wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.
Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone held a press conference at the school yesterday.
He informed the public the motivation behind the attack is not yet clear but it is not being treated as terror-related.
Jamie, from Newport, Wales, was rushed to hospital with one stab wound before being released that same day.
He was hailed as a “hero” and a “wonderful teacher” by parents after the incident.
In a statement he has now said he is “recovering well”.
He said: “On police advice, I can’t comment in detail about what happened, but I do want to address some misinformation which has been circulating in coverage of yesterday’s incident.
”It is simply not true to say that I was intervening in a fight between students.
”In my view, there was no point at which Tewkesbury students faced any direct threat.
“I am pleased to say that I am recovering well.
“I was well looked after at Gloucester Royal, and by the police, and I’m grateful for that.
”My thanks to everyone who helped put me on the road to what is expected to be a full recovery.”
The injured teacher also went on to say he is grateful for all of the messages of support and revealed he will be moving to a new school in September.
Pictures from the scene showed multiple patrol cars, vans and six unmarked cars at the school gates.
Cops were also speaking with concerned parents at the entrance.
Local residents reported sightings of helicopters and around three ambulances.
