The 3 easy and failsafe ways to stop pesky slugs eating your plants – and you might be able to bag them all for free
SLUGS can cause loads of problems for gardeners, including munching on plants and even bulbs still in the ground.
That’s why one gardening whizz has shared the three methods she swears by to keep them away.
Posting on social media, Amy Chapman explained how you can stop them nibbling away without spending a fortune.
“Slugs are a big problem here and I’ve tried so many different ways to stop them, but these are the main three that have actually worked,” she said.
First up, you can use wool to keep them away from your plants by placing around the base of the stems.
Amy explained: “Wool absorbs some of the slug’s slime, which repels them.
“I’ve used wool around some of my courgette plants and they’re pretty much untouched.”
The gardening pro’s second tip is to use seaweed to keep the pests at bay.
Used like a mulch around the bottom of your plant stem, seaweed will deter slugs from coming near because of the high salt content.
High quantities of salt can actually be really bad for plants, which is why you shouldn’t just put salt around the,.
“A lot of people say they just chuck the seaweed on without washing and never have a problem! I give mine a little rinse though because I’m over cautious,” Amy said.
Amy’s final tip might not be the most practical for all homeowners, but she’s found owning ducks has worked wonders for keeping slugs out of her garden.
“Slugs will spend all day looking for slugs, we have ours in our flower garden and there’s basically no slugs here anymore,” she explained.
Her hacks also work for snails, she noted, and they’re all natural methods too because she “isn’t a fan of pesticides.”
Other gardening fans loved the tricks too and couldn’t wait to try them out.
One said: “Never thought of wool or seaweed – thank you!”
“The wool idea is the best I’ve seen,” a second raved.
