I’m a hairdresser – here’s the huge mistakes you’re making that ruin your hair…they’ll wreck your dye too
A HAIRDRESSER has revealed TWO of the biggest mistakes people make that could cause lasting damage to their locks.
Paul Ralph, managing director at Ego Hair & Design in Inverness, is the current Scottish Hairdresser of the Year award winner and loves offering his top tips.
But while some advice sounds simple, it can also prove very important.
He says: “A big mistake is not using the conditioner. Some people with fine hair avoid conditioning the hair as they may feel it makes it flat.
“However, the conditioner is designed to close down the cuticle of the hair.
“Without using it, the hair becomes exposed to the elements and isn’t protected, causing the hair to become weakened and brittle.
“Find a conditioner which is designed for fine hair. This will tend to be lighter in texture.
“It will close down the cuticle and prevent the hair becoming damaged by day to day exposure.”
Paul adds: “Another mistake is not using UV protection on their hair when going outside.
“Just like the skin, hair affected by UV. It can be very damaging to the hair.
“It can cause the colour to change. It makes the hair weaker causing a rough outer surface, making the hair brittle and prone to breakage.
“When hair has lost its natural pigment, UV can be terrible for the hair as it has lost any natural UV filters it would have had within the natural colour.
“So if someone with grey hair, which has been coloured, goes into the sun, the UV will strip the colour out and make the hair lighter.
“The solution is to use products which contain UV filters. Many shampoos and conditioners contain these filters.
“There are many products on the market available for use as a sunscreen which can be sprayed into before exposure.
