The clever trick to deter pigeons from your garden – & it’s all about the flowers… but they have to be a specific colour
A GARDENING expert has revealed the easy way to get rid of annoying pigeons from your garden.
The clever hack requires no chemicals – in fact, it’s all about the plants you put in the garden.
While pigeons are harmless, they can cause damage to plants in the garden and your home.
Gardening experts at Sefton Meadows Garden Centre have urged people against scaring these birds away from gardens with harsh tactics as this would be cruel.
Instead, they offer natural alternatives to make your outdoor space less appealing to them.
Speaking to the Express, they said: “You can gently deter them from claiming your space as a hangout spot with the best bird deterrents for your garden.”
The first thing you can try is to plant white flowers.
It might sound weird but it’s for a very good reason.
The experts explained: “White is a ‘danger’ colour to birds, much in the same way that red is a warning colour to humans.
“Many birds use the white plumage in their feathers to show each other that there is danger ahead, so planting a variety of white flowers around areas you want to keep protected might be enough to deter birds from landing.”
Bird spikes can also keep pigeons out without causing them harm.
Instead, these spikes make it uncomfortable for the birds to perch on so they find elsewhere.
Noise can also put pigeons off relaxing in the garden.
Apparently, noise is “one of the number one bird deterrents”, but this doesn’t mean households should run into their garden banging pots together whenever they spot a bird fluttering through their garden.
Gardeners can buy specialist sonic pest repellers that are motion activated instead to deter them.
Wind chimes can also be hung up in the garden for a more “pleasant deterrent”, but birds will soon get used to this and “ignore the racket”.
