You’re washing your towels wrong – a laundry product I never use as a housekeeper, it makes them less absorbent
A HOUSEKEEPING pro has revealed her foolproof advice for making towels last longer.
She said that a commonly used product actually decreases their quality and absorbency over time.
“Did you know you’ve been washing your towels wrong?” asked Vanesa Amaro (@vanesamaro91) in a recent video.
“I’ve been a housekeeper for more than eight years and I’m going to tell you how to do it the right way.”
The cleaning expert said to start by using whatever powders you like, such as Borax or OxiClean.
The key to her expert tip was leaving out fabric softener, a product that is normally used with detergent to prevent wrinkles and static.
She added: “Fabric softener contains wax. Wax repels water. That is why your towels are no longer absorbing the water.”
For people who use fabric softener as a way to make their towels smell good, she recommended an alternative.
“You can also use a cup of vinegar to get rid of unwanted smells and no, your towels won’t smell like a salad. You’re welcome,” she said.
Amaro also responded “exactly” to a commenter who suggested not using liquid detergent while washing towels.
Other people were thrilled to see the housekeeper confirming vinegar’s cleansing benefits.
“I’ve been doing it right. I also add a little vinegar. It deodorizes and softens like fabric softener would,” wrote one satisfied viewer.
“Vinegar also softens! My clothes have been softer and less furry (cats) since switching,” added another.
Some commenters were horrified to discover how they’ve been washing their towels incorrectly.
“Omg I’ve been killing my towels,” said an amazed viewer.
Another added: “Wow, I’ve been doing it wrong.”
Some people were simply thankful for Amaro’s expert tips.
“I’ve been washing my towels the right way since I’ve been watching your videos,” wrote a supporter.
“I never knew this! Thanks so much for sharing!” said another impressed fan.
