Our seaside town is ruined by rude tourists – their behaviour is so selfish we can’t even drive down our own roads
LOCALS say their seaside town is being ruined by rude tourists who’s selfish behaviour means residents can’t drive down their roads.
Furious homeowners in St Ives, Cornwall, have slammed visitors after they’re made to battle simple tasks everyday.
The idyllic coastline is heaving during the summer months and people are now fed-up with their lives being made “impossible”.
Each year more visitors arrive, bringing with them traffic chaos, noise and litter, according to fuming locals.
And one has now taken to TikTok to highlight the mayhem they’re having to put up with on the narrow roads.
The user, who goes by the name ItsJayze, posted a short clip from his dascam footage showing the “carnage”.
Groups of tourists hogged the roads leaving no space for cars to pass through.
They appeared to be oblivious of the road and didn’t move out of the way for vehicles.
ItsJayze said: “It’s getting worse each week.”
Flooded with hundreds of comments from other annoyed users, one person said: “Honestly I live in Cornwall and can’t understand how many people that pavements are there for a reason.
“They just walk on into the road.”
Another complained: “They just don’t care. I heard somebody say they should close the roads off during busy periods.”
A third wrote: “I live near St Ives and people look at you funny for driving along the road while they’re walking along it, or just stand in the road oblivious.”
And some visitors weren’t too pleased with their experience in the Cornish town either and vented on TripAdvisor.
One tourist said: “Terrible for parking and too overcrowded. Drove round for an hour trying to find a parking space.
“We decided to not bother.”
Another holidaymaker wrote: “Generally a very quaint and friendly town. But overshadowed by poor parking, overcrowded streets, poor pedestrian areas mixed with traffic.”
Another scathing review read: “The beach is stunning but forget it if you’re trying to park.
“The parking in St Ives is beyond anything I have ever seen before.
“The parking hasn’t been updated in years and it is completely unpleasant where we couldn’t park to even get on the beach.
“We won’t be returning to St Ives ever as we couldn’t get a parking spot despite driving round for hours and no beach is worth the epic stress-levels as a result.”
Local RNLI lifeguard, Stefan Harkon explained the tourism issue is forcing the younger generation out of St Ives and putting their seaside town at risk.
He said: “At times, people in the town feel that they are just operatives in a theme park.
“We work in an area but we can’t live in it. We need quality jobs and more affordable housing.”
It comes as hundreds of UK holiday hot-spots experience the same trouble.
Elsewhere in Cornwall, residents of Mousehole, an idyllic staycation spot, have to leave town to buy everyday essentials.
Rising visitor numbers has wreaked havoc on the property market as houses are snatched up by tourists for holiday homes.
Meanwhile, in Padstow, North Cornwall, glorious golden beaches and picturesque countryside are a hit with tourists – but now its popularity is wreaking havoc with residents.
The disheartened community are so up-in-arms about the worsening housing situation and claim greedy tourists are “overburdening the system”.
And, families in a Yorkshire seaside ‘ghost town’ also say they are being forced out and torn apart by holiday home owners.
The residents of Robin Hood’s Bay, are facing a major housing crisis as demand for accommodation and second homes has driven house prices sky high.
