Woman, 25, arrested for ‘murder’ two years after man found dead in River Cherwell
A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man two years after he was found dead in a river.
Jorge Javier Martin Carreno, 30, was pulled from the water in the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire in July 2021.
Police have today arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of his murder.
The suspect, from Oxford, remains in police custody while she is quizzed by detectives.
Officers are currently at a home in Crotch Crescent and are conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area.
They confirmed Jorge’s death is still being treated as unexplained and said they are keeping an “open mind”.
Police were scrambled to the river near Parson’s Pleasure Bathing Place on July 26, 2021.
Jorge, who had been out the night before in Oxford city centre, was pulled from the water shortly after.
An inquest held last year returned a narrative verdict as the coroner urged police to investigate further.
Head of Major Crime, Detective Superintendent Kevin Brown said: “Although the investigation remains an unexplained death at this time, we are keeping an open mind as to how Jorge Javier Martin Carreno died in Oxford in July 2021.
“As a result of some new information, today (9/8) we have arrested a 25-year-old woman from Oxford on suspicion of murder. She is currently in police custody at this time.
“We have a scenewatch in place at a property in Crotch Crescent in the city and we will be conducting house to house enquiries in the area.
“We are likely to be in Crotch Crescent for a number of days while we carry out searches and enquiries. I would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation while we undertake this vital work in the area.
“Our thoughts remain with Mr Carreno’s family, who have been kept up-to-date regarding the progress of our investigation.”
