Double killer who arrived in UK posing as a schoolboy was flagged as terror threat before he murdered Royal Marine
A DOUBLE killer who arrived in the UK posing as a schoolboy was flagged as a potential terror threat before he murdered a Marine, an inquest heard.
Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai, 21, fatally knifed Tom Roberts outside a Subway takeaway in Bournemouth.
Shockingly, the Afghan national was convicted of murder in Serbia in 2018 after two people were shot dead outside a refugee area.
He then entered the UK in 2019 after claiming he was a 14-year-old whose parents had been killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
His lies were so convincing, he was placed in foster care where he nearly headbutted his carer.
A pre-inquest review into Tom’s death today heard how the Home Office‘s Prevent anti-terrorism programme had been made aware of Abdulrahimzai.
Adam Farrer, representing the Home Office, told the hearing: “We were given instruction that there is to be a further review by the Prevent homeland security department within the Home Office.
“As we understand it, in 2021 Mr Abdulrahimzai was referred to Prevent due to concerns that he was susceptible to terrorism.”
A review has now been launched into the latest development after a previous probe was carried out.
The results of that report will be restricted as it could reveal procedures used when processing applicants, the court heard.
But Coroner Rachael Griffin criticised the Home Office after Tom’s dad Philip Roberts revealed he had not received any contact regarding the reviews.
She said: “I am astounded that Tommy’s family have not been told about the review and I am sure you will feed that back and I would urge them to get in contact as soon as possible.
“It’s totally unacceptable what has happened over the past six or seven months as we have chased our tails to find out what has happened.”
Adjourning the inquest until January 9, Ms Griffin asked Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to provide details of its age assessment checks carried out on Abdulrahimzai.
The coroner also ordered Dorset Police to provide their files on the case and details of any internal review carried out.
Abdulrahimzai was jailed for life with a minimum term of 29 years in January after being found guilty of murdering Tom.
On March 12 last year, he had got into a row with Tom’s pal James Medway over an e-scooter.
When Royal Marine hopeful Tom intervened, he was stabbed in the heart and stomach by the “very aggressive” defendant.
Chilling CCTV showed Mr Medway chasing Abdulrahimzai through the city and into a park.
The killer was seen by horrified witnesses running “very fast” through the darkness in the busy town centre.
Tragically, the time between the argument breaking out and Tom being knifed was just 24 seconds.
Abdulrahimzai claimed to be 16 when he was arrested on suspicion of murdering Tom.
But after examination of his teeth, it was ruled he was actually 21 years old.
