Aldi makes wonderful gesture to devastated Wilko workers over fears stores will close ‘in weeks’
ALDI has made a wonderful gesture to devastated Wilko workers over fears stores will close.
The discount supermarket has asked that any workers affected by the collapse of Wilko to get in touch about jobs.
It said that Aldi has more than 6,000 jobs available at the moment across its UK stores.
The news comes after the GMB Union claimed the majority of Wilko stores will close in weeks.
Administrators at PwC, who now control the company, confirmed there’ll likely be closures and job losses – but denied claims stores will shut as early as next week.
It said talks were still ongoing with potential buyers in a bid to save the troubled chain.
Currently, all 400 shops are continuing to trade as usual but fears have been growing over the future of the stores, as well as 12,500 jobs.
Aldi is offering various long-term retail roles which include a range of positions from Store Assistant and Caretaker to Store Manager.
Aldi Store Assistants receive starting pay of £11.40 an hour and those based in London receive £12.85 per hour.
Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “We continue to welcome more and more customers to Aldi stores every week, and we are working hard to meet the huge demand for our unbeatable prices.
“That means finding thousands of new Aldi colleagues to support this growth, which will hopefully be of interest to those who have recently lost out due to closures elsewhere.”
Earlier this month rival chains Home Bargains and Dunelm also offered devastated Wilko staff new roles after the retailer collapsed.
Discount stationery shop The Works said it would “guarantee an interview if there’s a role available” for all Wilko staff.
Poundland and B&M are reportedly still in talks to buy as many as 150 stores after the chain said shops will not close soon.
The Range is also said to still be in the auction process, sources have told The Sun.
Wilko fell into administration earlier this month, in another blow to the UK high street.
It launched a huge new sale last week with up to 50% off thousands of items including Christmas essentials and Halloween items.
The sale came after shoppers had been left disappointed when spotting bare aisles in their local shop, despite the launch of the administration sale.
Sources told The Sun that the chain is planning to restock shelves at all stores this week as the new sale starts.
Meanwhile, we spoke to two sales experts to find out what items are worth picking up in the sale – and the ones to steer clear of.
Plus, here is the full list of 400 Wilko stores at risk of closing.
