I’m a hairdresser, there’s a major hair myth I need to bust and it’ll change how you dye your hair
A HAIR expert has busted a major myth that she hears time and time again – and it’s all to do with dyeing your locks.
Hairdresser Rachel Valentine said that despite the common misconception that hair dye takes better to dirty hair, there is no truth to the idea.
She explained: “One of the biggest hair myths that I hear a lot – and I don’t even know where it came from – is that colour takes better on dirty hair.
“This couldn’t be further from the truth, actually. In fact, it’s the complete opposite.”
She then launched into a detailed explanation of why this is, helpfully breaking down the science bit by bit.
Rachel revealed: “When our hair is really dirty that basically means that it’s really greasy, so we have a big build up of oil on our scalp.
“This oil can actually act as a barrier and prevent the colour from taking on the hair, essentially.
“Not only this, but when your hair is really oily, it can actually look a lot darker.”
Rachel said this was an issue for people in her profession as it “skews our vision of what your hair colour actually is.”
Therefore, this could lead to colour mistakes or the tone of your hair ending up a lot darker than you originally wanted.
Rachel then encouraged others to follow her expert advice, and to ensure their locks were clean and fresh on their next visit to the salon.
However, Rachel was keen to point out that there is one exception to this otherwise blanket rule.
The hairdresser went on to say: “The only time that it may be beneficial to leave your hair slightly dirty is if you have a sensitive scalp, or you’re getting scalp bleach.
“Because that slight bit of oil on your scalp will act as a barrier to the colour and make your scalp less sensitive.”
But she was quick to add: “This should only be one or two days old hair – not overly greasy.”
After she shared the facts in her video posted to her TikTok account @rachelvalentinehair, she was inundated with comments from grateful followers.
One person wrote on the social media platform: “Thank you for being one of the people who actually gives explanations and advice instead of trying to promote products.”
While another person said they now understood why they “like going for dye mid wash cycle”.
They added that it was because the hair was “clean but also protects from bleach.”
