Girls Aloud fans in tears as BBC airs concert to mark two years since star Sarah Harding’s tragic passing
GIRLS Aloud fans were left in floods of tears as the BBC2 aired footage from a special concert to mark two years since Sarah Harding’s tragic death.
Sarah, who achieved 21 top ten singles including four No1’s with the group, died aged 39 in September 2021 following a breast cancer diagnosis.
On Saturday night, the broadcaster aired Girls Aloud: Tangled Up Live from the O2 as a chance to remember some of their greatest hits and as a tribute to Sarah.
The band, which shot to fame after being created on Popstars: The Rivals, performed at the music venue 15 years ago.
The footage of the concert showed Sarah, along with her bandmates Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh belt out some of their biggest tracks including Biology, Love Machine and Sound of the Underground.
Many fans were left emotional after watching the special gig.
One wrote: “Sarah not being here anymore is just still so utterly mad. #girlsaloud.”
A second said: “I still miss Sarah a lot…she was the life of the group so beautiful and so talented too!”
A third posted: “So heartbroken watching these clips of Sarah Harding.”
“Watching @GirlsAloud Tangled Tour on BBC2… I went to this actual show…I have the tour dvd!! Cannot believe it was 15 years ago… and now we’ve tragically lost Sarah,” a fourth added.
“This tour brings back so many memories”.
While this fan commented: “Watching Girls Aloud on BBC2 and just admiring how much of a performer Sarah Harding was. She was incredible when I saw them in 2013 too, I miss her a lot, such a beautiful & talented woman.”
Sarah found fame on the ITV singing competition Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.
They formed the band Girls Aloud and went on to have a huge career spanning a decade together.
In July 2009, the girls announced they would be taking a year-long hiatus.
Time rolled by and they ended up getting back together for a 10-year reunion tour in 2013, before announcing they were splitting for good.
Cheryl and her bandmates all went off to focus on their own careers, with her, Nadine and Kimberley also becoming mothers too.
In August 2020, Sarah made the shock announcement that she had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer.
The girls rallied round and grew close again in the wake of her tragic health news.
Sarah underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy in a bid to prolong her life but she sadly died 13 months later.
The singer’s devastated mum Marie confirmed the heartbreaking news, saying her “shining star” had “slipped away”.
She wrote at the time on Instagram: “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away.
“Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day.
“She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved.
“I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead.- Marie.”
